What a hard run does to a muscle

A long or fast effort leaves microscopic damage in the muscle fibers. That's not a malfunction; it's the signal. The repair project that follows is how muscle gets more capable, and it runs in roughly three overlapping phases:

  • Clean-up. In the hours after the run, immune cells move into the damaged tissue to clear debris. This is inflammation doing its job, and it's why the area gets tender and a little swollen. Inflammation here is part of the repair, not the enemy of it.
  • Repair. Over the next day or two, satellite cells (the muscle's stem cells) activate and fuse with damaged fibers, patching the micro-tears and laying down new tissue.
  • Remodeling. New contractile protein is woven into the fibers and organized along the lines of stress you've been applying. This is the part that makes the next long run cost a little less.

  • In marathon runners, tart cherry concentrate was associated with significantly lower inflammatory markers IL-6 and CRP compared with placebo in the days after the race (Howatson 2010, Scand J Med Sci Sports).

Three caveats, because they change what you should do with this. The studies used juice or concentrate, taken daily for about a week around the effort; no study shows a single dose doing anything, and no head-to-head trial proves any extract dose equals the juice protocols.
